The History of Saint Croix

St. Croix today is a country and the largest island making up the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Virgin Islands are a territory of the United States, the capital of which is located on the island of St. Thomas. Throughout its modern history, St. Croix has flown the flags of seven different colonial powers. These are: Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, the Knights of Malta, Denmark and the United States.

St. Croix and the remainder of the Danish West Indies were sold to the United States in 1917 for $25 million. The United States was intent on making this exchange because the country felt that Germany would up taking hold of these islands and turn them into an outpost that would threaten directly the United States. In addition, the United States also backed the claim of Denmark for Greenland. Greenland remains a Danish dependency to this day, in fact.

Residents of the Virgin Islands, including St. Croix, are citizens of the United States. Having said that they do not have a right to vote in national elections in the United States. St. Croix actually represents the easternmost point in the United States.

In recent years, the island of St. Croix has been hit by a series of hurricanes, including Hurricane Hugo, that have left significant devastation about the island. Indeed, there remain buildings that still not have been cleaned up or repaired in the aftermath of these terrific storms. The most serious of these was Hugo in 1989.

Tourism is the main source of revenue on St. Croix today. It is a very popular travel destination for people on vacation or holiday. Rum is also a product of the island, Cruzan Rum is becoming a popular brand the world over. In addition, one of the largest oil refineries is located on the island of St. Croix.

There are many local traditions on St. Croix. For example, many of the locals on the island celebrate what is known as a full moon party every time that one does occur. In addition, there are other widely popular celebrations and events that are conducted each year in the St. Croix.

As mentioned a moment ago, tourism is the major industry on the island. People flock to the island from all parts of the globe the entire year around. There are a number of highly regarded resorts and hotels on the island. In addition, the beaches of St. Croix are a tremendous draw for people looking for a tropical paradise in which to spend a vacation or holiday. Finally, people visiting St. Croix also tend to take advantage of the Caribbean waters that surround the island and sail, fish and engage in various water sports.
